Honoring service

People around the nation took some time May 28 to observe Memorial Day. Locally, there many services that took place in the Long Lake and Maple Plain areas. At Union Cemetery (pictured) the service held by the Hamel VFW Post and Auxiliary #5903 included music by the Orono High School band and guest speaker Long Lake Mayor Tim Hultmann. Other observances were held at St. Georges Cemetery at the west end of Long Lake and at Nelson Lakeside Park. In Maple Plain, the Paul Stinson Post 514 American Legion Memorial Day service was held at Lewis Cemetery and featured guest speaker Independence Mayor Marvin Johnson. The Legion firing squad also saluted the departed at Oakland Cemetery, Christ Lutheran Cemetery and at the Loretto Catholic Cemetery.
