North Shore Gymnastics Association’s (NSGA) Level 9 gymnast and 13-year old Spring Park native Shane Wiskus competed at the 2012 Men’s USAG Junior Olympic National Championships on May 11 through 13.
The meet was hosted by Queen City Gymnastics and was held at the Duke Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Over 700 gymnasts qualified to compete in the Junior Olympic National Championships. Shane is coached by Dale Bullivant at the North Shore Gymnastics Association training facility in Maple Plain.
The Junior Olympics is a three day meet. Day one qualifies the top 36 gymnast into the All Around finals.
Wiskus scored 79.05 in day one of the competition to put him in 18th place in the All Around. Scores from both days are added to give the final All Around rankings. Wiskus had a great second day scoring 81.25 giving him a total of 160.3, and helping him finish seventh in the All Around.
"To do better in the second day than the first is incredibly hard. The first day has a two judge panel, and the second day has a four judge panel," said Bullivant. Moving up 11 spots netted Wiskus a spot on the Junior Olympic National Team.
He also qualified for event finals on vault, still rings, and parallel bars. To qualify to the event finals, the gymnast must finish in the top six for that event. The third day is the event finals. Wiskus finished fourth on the parallel bars, fifth on the still rings, and sixth on the vault.
USA Gymnastics selects the Junior National Team from this competition. The top 14 in All Around from the Junior Olympic National Championships are selected to be on the team.
Placing seventh, gives Wiskus a spot on the 2012-2013 team. Team members will travel to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado twice a year for a vigorous camp directed and coached by the USA Gymnastics Olympic staff. Coach Bullivant will also attend the camps in Colorado.
All gymnasts who competed on the 2008 Olympic team were Junior National team members and have attended the same camps. Wiskus, who has trained at North Shore for over seven years, has previously been a Future Stars National Team Member. This has been a tremendous achievement for Shane who has set a goal of someday being an Olympic Gymnast.
