In the double-elimination tournament that is Section 2AAA softball, the Waconia softball team battled their way through tough competition for a shot at a spot in the section title game.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats ended their season with a loss by falling to No. 2 seeded Mankato East in the section semifinals on May 29.
In the 1-0 loss, it was three up, three down for the ‘Cats and the Cougars for the majority of the game. With only five hits between the teams, the game ran less than an hour.
The Cougars scored their lone, game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning off two singles.
Mankato East senior Nicole Ries pitched the shutout for the Cougars, shutting down the Wildcats with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Senior shortstop Sami Schnyder earned both hits for the Wildcats, going 2-3 at the plate with two singles.
Kiela DeVlaeminck shut down the Cougars from the Waconia mound, with five strikeouts and one earned run.
The Wildcats scored no runs on two hits and had two defensive errors. The Cougars scored one run on three hits and had one error.
The Cougars went on to defeat Prior Lake for the section title and begin state tournament play this weekend. Look for a full season wrap up of the Waconia softball team in the coming weeks.
