Success was achieved by the Mayer Lutheran track and field teams at the Section 4A competition on June 2. With five event advancing to the state competition, head coach Tim Bierbaum said the team had a ton of personal and season best times.
"God gave us a beautiful day to compete and I think that we did our part to praise him with our talents," Bierbaum said.
Senior Jessica Klaustermeier advanced to the state competition in the 200-meter dash after her second place finish at sections. Her final time was 26.28 seconds, just ahead of the state qualifying mark of 26.31. Additionally, Klaustermeier was recently named the Most Valuable Track Athlete in the Minnesota River Conference.
The girls’ team also advanced two relays, including the 4×200 (Josie Schreiner, Nicole Manteuffel, Ashlyn Hucky, and Klaustermeier) and the 4×400 teams (Manteuffel, Klaustermeier, Sam Bartz, and Holly Johnson). The boys advanced the 4×400 team (Sean Bartz, Kyle Fredrickson, Consti Siggelkow, and Alex Fredrickson) and the 4×800 team (Alex Fredrickson, Kyle Fredrickson, Chase Greenhagen, and Jesse Greenhagen).
Preliminary state competition will be on Friday, June 8 with the finals on Saturday.
At the section meet, the boys’ team finished fifth overall with 57 points. St. Croix Lutheran won the meet with 139.50 points.
Top finishes for the boys included Alex Fredrickson (fourth, 800-meter run); Jesse Greenhagen (sixth, 3200-meter run); Nathan Schneewind (third, pole vault; ninth. 110-meter hurdles); the 4×100 team (eighth); the 4×200 team (sixth); Matt Carlson (fourth, pole vault); Taylor Otterstatter (sixth, triple jump); and Mark Esser (eighth, discus).
The girls were sixth overall with 90 points. Providence Academy won the division with 116 points. Top competitors for the girls that did not advance to state included Schreiner (third, 100-meter dash); Bartz (seventh, 400-meter dash); the 4×100 team (fifth); the 4×800 team (fourth); Manteuffel (fifth, high jump); Sarah Ruschmeier (sixth, high jump); Maria Kuntz (sixth, high jump); Jennifer Krentz (sixth, pole vault); Klaustermeier (fifth, long jump); Kristen Mielke (sixth, long jump); Hucky (fifth, triple jump); Miriam Wilson (sixth, shot put; sixth, discus).
