Senior Luke Johnson and junior Matt Rachey will represent Waconia High School next week at the state golf competition at Bunker Hills. Both golfers advanced after two tough days of section play, according to head coach Paul Henn.
"We had a great two days at the section tournament," he said. "Against what may be the toughest competition of any 3A section in golf."
After the first day of section play on May 31, the Waconia boys’ golf team sat in second place with 302 strokes on the day and advanced the team to the second round.
Rachey was Waconia’s top finisher of the day with 71 strokes. Johnson shot a 75, closely followed by Kyle Kauma (77) and Blaine Wilsey (79).
Day two on June 4 posted the team’s best score of the season, a 299. With a total 601 strokes, the Wildcats tied with Chanhassen for the top spot. Waconia would lose the score card tie breaker and earn second place in the section. Eden Prairie finished third with 603 strokes, followed by Chaska (604) and Lakeville South (605).
Henn said the 601 score from sections is the team’s best finish in sections in his seven years as the coach of the Wildcats.
Individually, Rachey was second overall posting a two under par score of 142 for both days of competition. Johnson just behind Rachey in third, scoring one over for a 145.
Also competing for the Wildcats were Wilsey (155), Kauma (159), junior Ryan Mattson (183), and junior Tyler Cannon (187).
Rachey and Johnson will compete in the state tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday June 12-13. This will be Johnson’s first state appearance and Rachey’s third.
