A dedicated group of quilters at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Bongards have made a significant contribution in the battle against cancer over the past several years.

The group, a part of the UCC Quilters Against Cancer team, have raffled off hand-stitched quilts over the past four years for the Relay for Life, and raised approximately $1,000 to $1,250 each year, according to group member Penny Rolf.

Raffle ticket sales for this year’s queen-size quilt will take place June 11-15 at KleinBank in NYA, June 16 at Econofoods and June 22 at Citizen’s State Bank. The quilt, which will also be on display at those locations, will be raffled off at the Relay for Life the evening of July 20. Ticket prizes are $2 for one ticket and $5 for three tickets. Anyone interested in purchasing a ticket can also call Shirley at 467-2865 or Penny at 442-4389.

Members of the quilting group gather almost every day in the church basement, working on quilts for a variety of events and individuals. Does having multiple people working on the same quilt ever cause problems?

"No. We’re all Germans. We all do it the German way," said Kathleen Schneewind with a laugh.

Last year the group made five quilts, and each quilt takes about 78 to 100 hours to make.

"It really is a lost art," said Schneewind.
