A car versus semi crash on Highway 12 claimed one life.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol website, a Honda Accord and a Mack Semi crashed June 19 at 6:45 a.m. on Highway 12. Orono Police Chief Correy Farniok said that crash happened about one-half mile east of the County Road 6 intersection.

The State Patrol’s site notes that Bruno Sagnweu, 37 of Oakdale, was traveling west on Highway 12 in the Accord when he lost control and hit a wall. The vehicle then crossed in front of and hit a semi traveling east on the highway driven by Dale Poirier, 60 of Dassel. The crash killed Sagnweu. Poirier had no apparent injuries.

The highway was wet at the time of the crash. No alcohol was detected on either driver, according to the State Patrol’s website.

Farniok said that the highway was closed until approximately 9:30 a.m. due to the accident.

Just a couple of days prior to the accident, Highway 12 had been closed where it bypasses Long Lake so crews could construct safety enhancements to the roadway. For years there had been worries about unsafe conditions on the bypass, but Farniok said that the site of the June 19 accident was outside of the area of concern.
