The Waconia Patriot’s parent company, ECM Publishers, Inc., is dedicated to not only publishing news about local communities, but to giving thousands of dollars to help make the community better.
The effort is traced back to the beliefs of the company’s founder, the late Elmer L. Andersen, who founded the company on four basic tenants: service to the customers, employees, shareholders and communities.
In that spirit, the Waconia Patriot is conducting a food drive to benefit the Waconia United Food Shelf, which is "A community organization providing food and supportive services to residents of Independent School District 110, Victoria and Cologne."
The food drive starts Monday, July 9 and ends Friday, July 20.
During that time, community members are welcome to drop off non-perishable food items or cash donations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Waconia Patriot office, which is located at 8 Elm Street in downtown Waconia. As a thank you for your donation, your family will be entered in a drawing to win four passes to any 2012 Minnesota Lynx home game. Donation jars will also be located at a handful of area businesses.
Summer months are especially hard on local food shelves and their recipients. Many children are not getting the benefits of the breakfast and lunch programs at their schools. Local families rely on what the food shelf has to offer. Remember that even $1 helps … the food shelf is able to turn that $1 into 5 lbs of food.
