Military banner given to Mound resident

The Mound American Legion and the Mound American Legion Auxiliary of Mound Post #398 recently presented a five star banner to Saundra (Saza) Stanchfield of Mound.

Saza has 5 grandchildren currently serving in the Armed Forces. Her grandchildren include Caleb Oberg, Katherine Oberg, and Christopher Wendover, who are currently in the Air Guard reserves stationed at Holman Field in St. Paul. Laura Dearing is in the Army and is stationed at Fort Benning, Ga, and Jared Dearing is a Marine who is currently in South Carolina, but he will be headed overseas soon. His destination is regarded as confidential.

Presenting the banner, were Cindy Palm, president of the American Legion Auxiliary and attended by Jay Molick, and Gary Craswell, of the Mound Legion.

A gathering for Saza and family, with friends was celebrated with a cake and a proclamation from the Commander.

A blue star banner is historically a banner to represent parents who have children in active military service.

Today, the blue star represents one family member serving, and a banner can have up to five stars. If the individual is killed or dies, a smaller golden star is placed over it. Gold stars are placed above the blue stars or to the top right of the flag in the event a flag represents multiple service members.
