Hamburg Lions celebrate 30 years

The Hamburg Lions Club celebrated 30 year of service at its June dinner meeting.

The club was chartered on June 38, 1982 and was sponsored by the Green Isle Lions Club. Five of the charter members are still active members of the club. They are Lions Donald Dammann, Duane Kroells, Jeffrey Laurel, Leo Pouliot and Carl Selchow. All were present at the anniversary dinner.

5M2 District Governor, Lion Sue Bowman, was a special guest that evening. She commended the club on its continued enthusiasm to serve not only the community but the whole of Lions International by its many successful fundraisers and contributions.

She went on to list the many services which the club has regularly contributed to, including the MN Hearing & Service Dogs, Diabetes Foundation, Hearing Foundation, MN Vision Foundation, Leader Dog, Can do Canines, Spring Point Program and Project New Hope right here in Minnesota.

Internationally, the club has made substantial donations to LCIF, LCIF Haiti, LCIF Measles, Vision Honduras, Campaign Sight First II and Youth Exchange.

The club’s yearly community projects include supporting the Carver, McLeod and Sibley County food shelves; the post prom parties at Sibley East, McLeod East, Central and Mayer Lutheran high schools; the Carver County Library’s summer reading programs; third-grade dictionary project; Peace Poster project; Write-Off contest; and three $500 college scholarships.

In Hamburg the club was instrumental in building the large shelter at BiCentennial Park, and also helped with the tennis courts and the basketball court, the handicap ramp at the Community Hall, and the new floor for the Community Hall. The club has also purchased new picnic tables for the park and replaced banquet tables for city hall.

The club sponsors Lunch with Santa every year and replaces the town’s Christmas decorations when needed. Recently, the club planted trees in the park. Club members continue to work with the Hamburg Fire Department and its many community projects as well.

In other business during the meeting, Kim and Mallory Schneider were welcomed as new members into the clubs and were installed by Bowman. Their sponsors are Lions Diana Kroells and Sarah Gruenhagen.

Bowman then conducted the installation of the 2012-13 club officers, who are: President Diana Kroells, 1st Vice President Bob Gregonis, 2nd Vice President Chris Lund, Secretary Sarah Gruenhagen, Treasurer Duane Kroells, Lion Tamer Tyler Roth, Tail Twister Bruce Gruenhagen and board member Joel Franck.
