Spirit of the Lakes to feature many food opportunities

Festivals mean entertainment and food, and the 2012 Spirit of the Lakes Celebration and Mound Centennial July 13 through 22 will be no exception. Surfside Park & Beach will be the scene for daily entertainment from July 19 through 22.

First on the schedule is a Kiddie Parade on Thursday, July 19 at 7:05 p.m., then "Music in the Park" at 7:15 p.m. featuring the "Tuxedo Band," followed by a dance to "The Branden Projekt" from 8:30 to 11p.m. Friday, July 20, the music and entertainment will last from 5 p.m. to midnight with "Mighty Le Caw", "Ladies of the 80s", and "Rock It Science."

Saturday, July 21, has events scheduled from 7 a.m. to midnight with entertainment that includes the Grand Parade at 10 a.m., Kids Activities at 11 a.m., and Square Dancing at noon, 1:30 and 3 p.m. at the Gillespie Center. The band "Soul Tree" will play from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with "Rhino" from 8 to 9:30 p.m., followed by Fire Dancers and then the best fireworks on Lake Minnetonka at Dusk.

There will no need to go hungry or thirsty during the Festival either. On Wednesday, July 18, there will be a pulled pork dinner, with bingo, at the Gillespie Center beginning at 5 p.m. On Thursday and Friday there will be Beach Bars in the park all evening and a food court on Friday from 5 to 11 p.m. The food court will also be open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wine and sake tasting, and beer tasting will also be taking place on Friday and Saturday in the park at various times (see Harbor Wine & Spirits for tickets). A French toast breakfast will be served at the Mound Masonic Lodge Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.

Other entertainment activities will include the Arts Festival, Business Showcase, Westonka Historical Society historical displays and historic boat tours in the park on Saturday. On Sunday. the antique car and boat show and historical bus tours will be happening on the Mound Greenway and Pier. With all the activity in and around Surfside Park & Beach and the Mound Greenway and Pier, getting around and parking doesn’t need to be a problem. Westonka Transportation will run a free shuttle service on Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. The shuttles will run continuously from free off-site parking located at the Mound Transit Center, Shirley Hills Primary School/St John’s Church parking lots to the Surfside Park and back again every 10 minutes.
