The average cost of school supplies range from $20 to $30 depending on the child’s grade. Add to that a new backpack or graphing calculator and families are facing $50 or more per student.
With the rising cost of gas and groceries, many families in our community are faced with decisions on how to stretch their dollars to make ends meet. Purchasing school supplies can be a big stress on the family budget. You can help make that first day of school a positive experience for all kids in our community.
WeCAN is collecting new school supplies for children in our service area. Last year, WeCAN gave school supplies to over 233 children. WeCAN’s Ready to Learn program cannot happen without the generosity of our community. You can make a difference.
Collection boxes will be at many different locations through August 13. These include area churches Bethel Methodist, Christ Lutheran in Maple Plain, First Presbyterian of MP, Freshwater, Good Shepherd, Lyndale Lutheran, Mainstreet, Mt. Olive Lutheran, Mound Evangelical Free, Our Lady of the Lake, River Valley, St. Boniface Catholic, St. John’s Lutheran and St. Martin’s. Collections will also be held at the Bank of Maple Plain, Caribou in Mound, Crow River Bank, Curves, Gillespie Center, Jubilee, Klein Bank, MPFC, Minnetonka Mud, St. Bonifacius City Hall, Wells Fargo, Westonka Library and at the WeCAN office, located at 5213 Shoreline Drive in Mound.
Listed below are some of the items that are in most demand: larger backpacks, 1 & 1 1/2 inch – 3 ring binders, composition books, pocket folders, art sketch books, Ziploc bags (gallon & quart), boxes of tissues, disinfectant wipes, dry erase markers and washable markers.
Supplies will be distributed to families in the WeCAN service area at the WeCAN office on Wednesday, Aug. 22 and Thursday, Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Recipients should have children entering grades K-12 during the 2012-2013 school year and bring the following: ID for parent/caregiver, Proof of address (lease, utility bill from past 30 days) and ID for each child receiving school supplies (school ID, medical insurance card, social security card, or report card from 2011-2012).
