Princess Kay finalists are making history

This is a historical year for the Carver County Dairy Princess program. For the first time ever, there are two dairy princesses representing Carver County in the competition for the Princess Kay of the Milky Way title.

Valerie Grimm of Waconia and Victoria Haler of NYA/Waconia, both 2012 graduates of Waconia High School, will both make appearances at the State Fair this year.

The Princess Kay of the Milky Way program was started in 1954 as a way to encourage Minnesotans to increase their dairy consumption. Since that time, there have been 17 Carver County Dairy Princesses competing for the title. Two have gone on to become Princess Kay.

The first was Janet (Forner) Bosch, originally from Chaska in 1982, and second was Beth Messenbring-Mastre, originally from Cologne, in 1990.

Princess Kay serves as the Goodwill Ambassador for Minnesota’s 4,300 dairy farmers. During her reign, which starts the eve of the Minnesota State Fair, she will serve all 12 days of the Minnesota State Fair and will then spend the year travelling around the state promoting the goodness of dairy.

The journey to Princess Kay begins at the county level each year. Once crowned as a county dairy princess, all dairy princesses from across the state meet for three days at the ‘May Event’ in St. Joseph, Minn., to interview to become one of 12 Princess Kay finalists. Those 12 young women serving as dairy princesses from various counties around the state will gather August 20-22, to interview and do media presentations. Of those 12, one will be chosen as Princess Kay, to be introduced at the 59th Princess Kay of the Milky Way Coronation at the Minnesota State Fair Bandshell the evening of Aug. 22, at 8:30 p.m.

To honor and support 2012 Carver County Dairy Princesses and Princess Kay Finalists Valerie Grimm and Victoria Haler, Carver County American Dairy Association is hosting fan buses sponsored by ABS Global (Rick Haler), B&R Dairy Equipment of Winthrop, Citizens Bank of Norwood, Dan Broll Chopping and Bagging, First MN Bank of Mayer, Glencoe Co-op/Meuller Sales, K&M Lawn and Landscape, Koch Bus Service, Lano Equipment of Norwood, Liberty Veterinary Services(John Zimmerman), Munson Lakes Nutrition of Howard Lake, Norwood Veterinary Clinic, Larry Ruehling Milk Trucking, and Russ Schlegelmilch Large Square Baling.
