Jared Duske’s RBI single in the first inning of a Region 7C tournament game on Friday night in Young America was all the Red Devils needed to knock off Brownton and keep the team’s state tournament hopes alive into the second weekend of the tournament.
The Red Devils’ first-round win over Brownton was suspended after seven innings due to rain and resumed on Saturday. The delay didn’t stop the Devils’ momentum, however, as they preserved the shutout and moved into the winner’s bracket.
After Ryan Hangartner reached base in the first inning against Brownton, he moved to second and third base on two separate wild pitches, both times arriving just before the tag. His aggressive base running paid off when Duske ripped a ground ball down the line and into the left field corner to give the Red Devils the lead, a lead starting pitcher Patrick Tschida made stand up.
With the win over Brownton, Watertown advanced to the winner’s bracket to take on Waconia. Watertown lost that game 8-1, but is still alive in the double elimination tournament.
Waconia and Green Isle have already both advanced to the state tournament. Watertown will return to action to take on the host team, Young America, at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, following the game between Winsted and Brownton.
The loser of the game between Watertown and Young America is out of the tournament, but the winner advances to take on the winner of the Winsted/Brownton game on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 4 p.m.
The winner of that game would move on to play the loser of the Waconia/Green Isle winner’s bracket game at 7 p.m. on Saturday for the right to advance to the championship round on Sunday at 1 p.m. If Watertown advances to the championship round, the Red Devils would need to win twice to win the tournament.
