Hope SOARS! at Relay For Life of Waconia

A strong sense of community and hope filled the Carver County Fairgrounds last Friday and Saturday as hundreds of people attended the 3rd annual Relay For Life of Waconia.
According to D.J. Teeselink, chairwoman of the event, the Relay “was another smashing success” as more than $104,000 was raised for the fight against cancer. Donations will continue to be accepted to benefit the Relay through Friday, Aug. 31 (www.relayforlife.org/waconiamn).
The Relay included a number of special moments, such as when more than 75 cancer survivors posed for a group photo before releasing butterflies to symbolize the theme of the Relay, Hope SOARS! Other touching moments included a speech by Jennifer Keaveny, the Honorary Cancer Survivor, and the Luminaria Ceremony.
Teeselink thanked everyone who helped make the Relay a success, including the community, businesses, sponsors, teams, participants, performers, volunteers, and first time Relayers. She also gave special thanks to Keaveny and Judy Janish, the event’s Honorary Caregiver.
Almost 120 people signed up for the Cancer Prevention Study – 3 (CPS-3), which is a new research study designed to help researchers understand how to prevent cancer. Teeselink said organizers were pleased with the turnout for the enrollment. Waconia was one of only four sites in Minnesota to offer the chance to sign up for the study.
The 4th annual Relay For Life of Waconia will be held on Aug. 16, 2013.
