The Watertown-Mayer volleyball team was in action only once last week, when it was swept by Glencoe-Silver Lake. GSL won a tight first set, 25-23, before cruising through the next two, 25-11, 25-13.
The Royals had opened the season the weekend prior at the Albany Tournament, where the team went 1-3.
In the first match, a 2-0 loss against Albany, Ashley Veleatzek led the way with four kills, and Kiana Paulson added three. Britni Grossinger had two aces, Katelyn Yliniemi had 11 assists and Paulson had five digs.
In the second match, a 25-21, 28-26 loss to New London-Spicer, Veleatzek had 10 kills and three aces to lead the offense. Paulson had four kills and Chelsea Wandersee had 12 assists and three aces. Ashley Kelzer had three kills and two aces, and Brianna Peter had nine digs.
Veleatzek also led the team with six kills in a 25-23, 25-20 loss to Little Falls. Wandersee had 11 assists, two aces and nine digs, and Veleatzek also had nine digs.
The Royals pulled things together in a 25-13, 25-21 win over Milaca in the final match. Veleatzek again led the way with seven kills, while Wandersee had five kills and nine assists. Kelzer had five aces, six digs and three kills.
Stats from the Glencoe-Silver Lake match were not available at press time. The Royals were also in action Tuesday, Sept. 4, in their home-opener against Holy Family. The Royals also host Tri-City United on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 7:15 p.m. in the Minnesota River Conference opener, and host Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity on Monday, Sept. 10, also at 7:15 p.m.
