Despite its small numbers, nine girls and 11 boys, the Mayer Lutheran/Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity cross country team isn’t out of contention this year, according to head coach Renae Johnson of Mayer Lutheran.
In their first outing this season, the Crusaders finished strong at the Rockford Invitational on Sept. 6. The boys’ team was third overall, led by senior Alex Fredrickson, who finished sixth with a time of 16:00. Brandon Duffy and Kyle Fredrickson finished 12th and 14th overall, with times of 16:48 and 16:55, respectively. Jacob Roth and Ben Quiram completed the team scoring with times of 17:56 and 18:39. Freshman Alex Mielke also ran, finishing in 18:39.
The Crusader girls were fifth in the team competition. Freshman Hannah Truniger was second overall with a time of 15:29. Senior Holly Johnson was second for the Crusaders in 17:06, followed by Sarah Ruschmeier (17:34), Miranda Buesing (17:42), and Marie Landskroener (18:30). Nina Kukowski also competed for the varsity squad, finishing in 22:06.
The junior varsity teams also turned in strong times. Wyatt Entinger finished sixth in his race with a time of 19:15, leading Jason Entinger (19:56), Jake Daniels (21:20), and Dale Lemmer (22:16). In the 2,500-meter junior high course, seventh grader Andrew Jackson ran a 6:58. In the girls’ race, seventh grader Emilie Berry was third overall (6:25), followed by Alison Miller (8:15), and Grace Dietrich (9:14).
The Crusaders will run at Waconia’s home invitational next Tuesday, Sept. 18.
