Royals run well at NYA


The Watertown-Mayer boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed at the Norwood Young America Lions Meet last Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Baylor Park, where the Watertown-Mayer girls’ team finished in fifth place and the boys’ team finished in 10th place.

The fifth-place finish for the girls’ team came in a 15-team field, which was won by Holy Family with 41 points. Waconia was a distant second with 81 points. Dassel-Cokato was third, Belle Plaine was fourth and Watertown-Mayer was fifth with 179 points.

On the boys’ side, Mound-Westonka was the winner with 79 points in a 20-team field. Watertown-Mayer was 10th with 275 points.

Individually for the Royals, the top female finisher in the 4,000-meter race was junior Liz Miller, who took seventh place with a time of 16:33.6. Senior Hannah Johnson was right behind with a 12th-place finish and a time of 16:55.8.

Also for the Royals, freshman Lydia Fails competed for the first time after returning from injury, finishing in 46th place with a time of 18:23.3. Junior Erin Sonderup-Hohenestein finished 62nd with a time of 19:01.5, senior Kaila Anderson was 64th with a time of 19:08.8; senior Laura Hertzog was 71st with a time of 19:23.0 and eighth-grader Kirsten Klitzke was 76th with a time of 19:32.3.
“Lydia Fails returned to the lineup and ran strong,” Watertown-Mayer coach Rich Winter said.

On the boys’ side, the top individual finisher in the 5,000-meter race was senior Casey Fails, who took 39th with a time of 19:05.2. Senior Jay Boerner was close behind in 46th place with a time of 19:17.8,
Sophomore Mike Burns added a 50th-place finish with a time of 19:22.7 and sophomore Jon Vouk was 66th in 19:52.7. Senior Caleb Fails was 74th in the 20:02.4, junior Ethan Thonn was 88th in 20:17.9 and Josh Oak finished in 23:44.1.

“Jay Borner and Jon Vouk ran really well for the boys,” Winter said.

The Royals were also in action at Waconia’s annual meet at Crown College on Tuesday, Sept. 18. They’ll be back in action Saturday, Sept. 22, for Milaca’s invitational at Stones Throw Golf Course beginning at 10 a.m.
