Waconia’s volleyball team is holding on to a spotless conference record at the moment, after picking up a pair of conference victories last week over Litchfield and Annandale.
The Wildcats are currently 4-0 in the Wright County Conference, tied for the No. 1 spot with Orono, a team that is also 4-0 in conference play, but 9-2 overall. Waconia holds an 11-4 season record.
Waconia 3, Litchfield 0
Making quick work of the Dragons on Sept. 11, the Wildcats defeated Litchfield 25-11, 25-14, and 25-19. Waconia jumped up to a quick 9-0 start in the first set, and continued to extend their lead throughout the match.
It was an Anna-filled evening of serving, as senior Anna Pioske (4) and sophomore Anna Schmitt (3) combined for seven aces. Schmitt had 32 assists on the night, setting up big kill nights for Pioske (14), sophomore Jessica Wolf (11), and senior Stephanie Dressen (7). Junior Kirsten Wagener also had six kills on the night.
Defensively, Pioske had 11 digs, while Dressen and Wolf each had three blocks.
Waconia 3, Annandale 0
At Annandale on Sept. 13, the Wildcats easily won the three sets 25-14, 25-10, and 25-11. While Pioske led in kills with 15, it was an impressive night also for Wagener, who knocked down five kills in just six attempts. She also had five blocks on the night.
Also offensively, Wolf had seven kills and Schmitt had three aces. Defensively, senior Caroline Jacobs had 10 digs.
Waconia head coach Jim Lee said, despite the wins, the Wildcats did not play up to their expectations against Litchfield and Annandale.
“Knowing this, our focus is on preparing for a huge Shakopee match on Monday [Sept. 17] coupled with the Glencoe and Holy Family matches that follow while improving in the essential facets of the game,” Lee said.
The Wildcats played at Shakopee on Sept. 17, winning 3-0.
