The Watertown-Mayer High School cross teams were in action twice last week, once at Waconia’s Run of the Lakes meet at Crown College on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and again at the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday, Sept. 22.
At Crown College, the Watertown-Mayer girls took third place and the boys’ took sixth. At the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday, which included roughly two dozen teams in the Class AA meets alone, the girls’ team finished ninth out of 20 teams and the boys’ team finished 10th out of 24 teams.
At the Run of the Lakes meet, Glencoe-Silver Lake finished first in the boys’ race with 54 points and Delano was second with 69 points. Watertown-Mayer had 149 points. In the girls’ race, Waconia finished first with 49 points, Belle Plaine was second at 59 and the Royals were third with 80.
Individually on the girls’ side, Liz Miller and Hannah Johnson finished fourth and fifth overall for the Royals. Miller finished fourth with a time of 16:02 and Johnson was right behind in 16:34.
Eighth grader Kirsten Klitze also came up with a 15th-place finish in a time of 17:37 in the 4,000-meter race. Erin Sonderup-Hohenstein was 25th with a time of 18:09, Laura Hertzog was 31st in 18:28.44, Lydia Fails was 42nd in 19:35 and Lily Chadwick was 46th in 20:21.
On the boys’ side, the top finisher for the Royals was Casey Fails, who took 17th with a time of 18:35. His twin brother Caleb Fails was 21st with a time of 18:55.5.
Mike Burns came in 26th for the Royals, finishing with a time of 19:02. Jay Boerner was 42nd with a time 19:42, Jon Vouk was 43rd with a time of 19:44, Ethan Thonn was 47th in 20:15 and Josh Oak was 61st with a time of 22:15.
At Milaca on Saturday, Sept. 22, Perham came away with the boys’ title in Class AA with 30 points. Watertown-Mayer was 10th with 323 points. In the girls’ race, St. Cloud Cathedral won with 107 points, while the Royals were ninth with 246 points.
Individually, Miller had a strong effort, finishing sixth out of 167 runners with a time of 15:14.8. Johnson was 29th in 16:06.1. Lydia Fails was 81st in 17:09.4, Kaila Anderson was 82nd in 17:09.8, Kliltzke was 90th in 17:19.7, and Hertzog was 117th in 18:12.3.
On the boys’ side, Casey Fails led the way for the Royals with a time of 17:57.4 and a 50th place finish. Burns was 60th with a time of 18:13.2 and Caleb Fails was 70th in 18:27.6. Jay Boerner was 86th in a time of 18:51.3, Jon Vouk was 89th in 18:53, Ethan Thonn was 100th in 19:02.1 and Josh Oak was 147th in 20:34.4.
The Royals will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 27, at St. John’s Prep at 4 p.m., for their only meet of the week.
