Royals take fifth at home invite


The Watertown-Mayer/Delano girls’ swimming and diving team competed in two varsity home meets last week. The Royals fell in a Wright County Conference dual to Waconia on Thursday, Sept. 20, and also finished in fifth place out of seven teams at a home invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22.

At the home dual, the Waconia defeated WMD 115-71. However, the Royals had a number of strong individual performances during the meet.

Kayla Stevens won two events for the Royals. She won both the 100- and 200-meter freestyles. She won the 100 with a time of 57.3 seconds and the 200 with a time of 2:05.61.

Andi Jo Schrode also won an individual event for the Royals, winning in diving with 206.25 points. The Royals also won the 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 4:04. That team consisted of Jenna Grangroth, Noelle Johnson, Sophia Fillmore and Stevens.

Sommer Heikkila had the Royals’ only individual second-place finish, taking second in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:15.19, behind only her teammate, Stevens. Third-place finishes belonged to Grangroth in the 100-meter freestyle (1:03.15), Alexa Asbury in the 500-meter freestyle (6:15.91) and Thea Clark in the 100-meter backstroke (1:12.61).

Two days later at the Royals’ home invitational, Mound-Westonka finished in first place with a 334.5 points. Watertown-Mayer was fifth with 145 points.

Schrode led all WMD finishers by placing second in diving. Her 341.55 points were less than a half point out of first.
Noelle Johnson also had a strong meet, placing fifth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:45.93 and seventh in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:10.33. Stevens also had a pair of top 10 finishes, taking seventh in the 500-meter freestyle with a time of 5:50.81 and eighth in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:11.16.

Clark finished in seventh place for the Royals in the 100-meter backstroke, clocking in with a time of 1:09.67. Addie Weber was seventh in the 100 breaststoke with a time of 1:18.93.

Other top 10 finishes included Grangroth, who was eighth in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:35.63, and Mady Hendricks, who was eighth in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:19.41. The Royals’ 200-meter freestyle relay, consisting of Weber, Asbury, Klara Koch and Stevens finished fourth with a time of 1:50.22, and the 400-meter freestyle relay, consisting of Grangroth, Noelle Johnson, Fillmore and Stevens, finished fourth with a time of 4:04.87.

The Royals were also in action Tuesday at Litchfield, and will be back in the pool for a home dual on Thursday, Sept. 27, against Marshall at 6 p.m. WMD will also compete on Saturday, Sept. 29, in an invitational at Buffalo at 1 p.m., and again on Tuesday, Oct. 2, for a dual at St. Anthony Village at 5:30 p.m.
