The Holy Family football team fell to 2-2 last week after a 24-16 loss to Orono on Sept. 21.
While the Fire may have had 66 offensive plays and 350 offensive yards, compared to the Spartans 293 yards on 48 plays, it was Orono that came away with the win.
Orono scored in the first on a 31-yard touchdown pass from junior Ben Turnham to junior Anders Knutson. Holy Family returned fire in the second quarter, with a nine-yard touchdown run by senior Conner Riddle. The following play, Orono’s Nick Adzick returned the kickoff for an 89-yard touchdown. Senior quarterback Ben Baker completed an 11-yard pass to junior Nick Hanscom for the Fire’s second touchdown, putting Holy Family ahead 13-12 at halftime.
The third quarter was all Orono, as the Spartans scored two touchdowns. In the fourth, Holy Family sophomore Jonathan Coppens kicked a 32-yard field goal to make the game 24-16 in favor of Orono.
At quarterback, Baker was 10-14 for 97 yards and one touchdown. He also threw two interceptions. Senior Derek Ogren was 2-2 for 24 yards. Ogren caught six of Baker’s passes for 59 total yards. Other receivers included Hanscom (24 yards, one touchdown), Baker (24 yards), and sophomore Chazz Johnson (14 yards). Rushing leaders included Riddle (134 yards, one touchdown), Baker (55 yards), and senior Connor Byrnes (43 yards).
On defense, the Fire tallied three sacks on Orono. Senior Jimmy Curran and Johnson each logged one sack, while senior Tom Green and junior Luke Melander shared the glory of the third. Senior Ben VanDenBroeke had a fumble recovery for the Fire. Tackle leaders included Ogren (9), Byrnes (9), Green (5), and Baker (5).
The Fire will be on the road this week at No. 4 (4A) Hutchinson, before playing at Waconia on Oct. 5. Hutchinson is 4-0; Waconia is 0-4.
