WHS runners look strong

The Waconia boys’ and girls’ cross country teams are in their final weeks of the regular season, competing last week at Dassel-Cokato and Buffalo. The girls were second to Annandale at Dassel-Cokato on Sept. 25, while the boys’ finished third.

Sophomore Miles Trujillo competes for Waconia at Crown College on Sept. 18.

At Buffalo on Sept. 27, the Wildcats got a taste of the section course and a few of their conference and section teammates including Holy Family, Hutchinson, Delano, and Shakopee. Lexi Willems was sixth overall, turning in an under 16-minute time, something she has been striving for all season, according to head coach Clark Machtemes. With multiple varsity runners out sick, Allyson Marrs and Sam Wilsey got to run a varsity race and turned in solid times for the Wildcats, who finished sixth of 17 teams.

The boys were eighth of the 17 teams at the met, which is a solid finish that Machtemes was pleased with.

“Overall, the times are coming down,” he said.

Ben Vaske and Tony Fulkerson remain the boys’ top two runners, with strong performances at both meets. Jacob Tereau continues to hold the No. 3 spot for Waconia and has been steady and solid all season, according to Machtemes.

The conference championship meet will be at Delano on Oct. 11. The Wildcats will be at Watertown-Mayer on Oct. 16 before the section meet at Buffalo on Oct. 25.
