The Watertown-Mayer volleyball team lost its only match of the week last week, falling 3-0 in a Minnesota River Conference match at Norwood Young America.
In what has become a common theme for the Royals, they controlled much of the match, but were simply unable to close things out. Head coach Janis Runka said his team served for each of the first two sets before losing each in extra points, and ultimately fell to the Raiders 27-25, 24-26 and 25-12.
“We get to the end of the game and we just can’t close the door, put the lid on it,” Runka said. ‘That’s what we’re working on, because we have to play Mayer this Thursday, and it’s going to be rough.”
The Royals were led by nine kills, four aces, 10 digs and three blocks from Maggie Perrel, though the standout hitter wasn’t as efficient as normal with 38 attempts. Kate Theisen had a strong match for the Royals, posting seven kills and eight digs. Chelsea Wandersee had 25 assists and Ashley Vealetzek had nine digs and four kills.
The Royals host Mayer Lutheran at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, and will take on Sibley East on the road on Monday, Oct. 15, also at 7 p.m. After that, the Royals have a week off before closing the regular season at home against Delano at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22.
