Miss Waconia coronation set for Sunday, Oct. 14
After months of planning, the inaugural Miss Waconia Royalty Program will be held at Island View Golf Club in Waconia at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.
The event is open to the public. Admission is $5 per person at the door.
Six young women from Waconia are vying for the crown: Carissa Bakke, sponsored by Chanhassen Dinner Theatres; Jeni Haler, sponsored by ABS Global and Waconia Farm Supply; Caitlin Overby, sponsored by Balance Life; Sybil Rosenau, sponsored by Lil’ Explorers and Wild Prairie Homes; Ashley Sukhu, sponsored by The Hart Foundation and Pizza Ranch Waconia; and Madi Theis, sponsored by Paws Inn Resort.
The non-profit scholarship program got underway last May.
Ashleigh Moelter, Melanie Hagen, Felicia McKinster and Margit Whitman make up the committee that is overseeing the program, which will award a $1,000 scholarship to the candidate that is selected as the 2012-13 Miss Waconia and a $500 scholarship to the candidate that is named Miss Waconia Princess.
“Everyone is really excited,” Moelter said. “The feedback we’ve received has been really great. A lot of visiting royalty will be coming to the event from other towns.”
The candidates must be 18 by July 15, 2013 and under the age of 23 to compete. They also must have Waconia as their permanent residence. A three-person judging panel will evaluate the candidates based on a one-on-one interview and on-stage question.
Over the past several months, the candidates have volunteered at various events throughout the community. The individuals who are crowned will continue to volunteer throughout the community during their yearlong reigns.
Moelter said the hope is to continue the program next year and beyond.
“The goal down the road is to be able to send a Miss Waconia to the Minneapolis Aquatennial Royalty Program,” added Moelter, who is the current Mrs. Carver County. She’s not the only committee member with pageant experience, as Hagen is a former Miss Bismarck and contestant in the Miss North Dakota program.
Moelter will serve as the emcee of the event and Hagen will sing during the program. The committee invites the community to attend the program on Oct. 14.
“We give a big thank you to all of our sponsors,” Moelter added.
