Michael D. Wirtz, age 64, of Cologne, passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at his residence.
Memorial service held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012 at the Johnson Funeral Home (141 E. First St.), Waconia with Rev. Steve Anderson officiating. Visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Michael Dale Wirtz was born June 16, 1948 in Glencoe the son of Charles and Marcella (Maack) Wirtz. He was baptized at the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Cologne and later confirmed as a young adult at St. Paul’s Ev. Reformed Church of Hamburg. Michael graduated from the Central High School in Norwood.
Michael was inducted in the United States Army on April 10, 1968 and served until his Honorable Discharge on April 9, 1970 and was a reservist until 1974. He had served in Vietnam from September of 1968 through April of 1969. A sergeant, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Overseas Service Medal with one bar.
Michael worked as a machinist for Mammoth and later the Dristeem Corporation. He enjoyed watching the Vikings and the Twins.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Marcella Wirtz, and a nephew Scott Schmidt.
Michael is survived by sisters and brothers-in-law Susan and Wayne Manteuffel of Cologne, Marilyn and Roger Schmidt of Plato; nieces and nephews Todd and Lois Manteuffel, Trent and Pam Manteuffel, Paula and Nathan Beaver, Sara and Karl Schutte, Rodney and Lori Schmidt, Kurt and Molly Schmidt, Dina and Chris Urban, Mike and Tina Schmidt, Dan Schmidt; many great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
