Update: The No. 6 Waconia girls’ soccer team won its first game in Section 6A play, defeating Southwest Christian 2-1 on Oct. 9. They will play No. 3 Holy Family at HFCHS on Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. Holy Family defeated No. 14 Mayer Lutheran 11-0 on Tuesday.
The Waconia girls’ soccer team wrapped up the regular season last week with a win over Hutchinson and a loss to Chanhassen. The Wildcats finished the year 6-8-2, third in the Wright County Conference. With a 6-2-1 conference record, trailing No. 3 (1A) Orono (7-0-0) and Holy Family (8-2-0).
Waconia 6, Hutchinson 0
Leading 1-0 at halftime on Oct. 2, the Wildcats played well and created multiple scoring opportunities, according to Bruggeman.
“We just weren’t able to find the back of the net much in the first half,” he said.
The Wildcat offense posted five additional goals in the second half, while the defense shut down Hutchinson’s attack. Sophomore goalie Marae Vipond and junior Mackenzie Hedlund make key saves in the goal, allowing the Wildcats’ third shutout of 2012.
Senior Kayla Christensen scored three of the Wildcats’ six goals, two assisted by senior Kelly Luce, the other on a penalty kick. Luce scored a goal of her own (assisted by Christensen) and assisted a goal by junior Emily Hilk. Sophomore Elizabeth Honnold also knocked in a goal for Waconia, assisted by sophomore Trina Rinke.
Chanhassen 2, Waconia 0
Shut down by the Storm on Oct. 6, Bruggeman said outstanding Chanhassen goalkeeping kept the Wildcats out of the net.
“We had several quality attempts on goal that were stopped with tremendous saves,” he said. “On the attacking end of the field, we made some good runs and created some chances … Chanhassen’s goalkeeping was just the difference in this one.”
A strong Waconia defense held the Storm at bay, though Chanhassen capitalized on the few Waconia mistakes for goals.
“The important thing is that we’ve learned from this experience,” Bruggeman said. “All things considered, we’re well prepared … for Sectional playoffs.”
Sections The Wildcats drew the No. 6 seed in Section 6A. The top seed went to Benilde-St. Margaret’s, followed by WCC Champ Orono.
