Melvin ‘Mel’ Foss
Melvin “Mel” Foss, age 70, of Norwood Young America, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2012 at Lakeview Ranch Care Facility in Darwin, Minn. Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norwood Young America, with interment at a later date in the church cemetery. Melvin “Mel” Foss was born on April 1, 1942 in Morris, Minn., the son of Melvin and Clara (Branvold) Foss. Melvin was baptized as an infant on May 31, 1942, by Rev. Fred A. Meske Jr., and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth on May 19, 1957, by Rev. Victor Schmidt both at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Morris. He received his education in Morris. Melvin entered active military service in the United States Army in 1959, and served his country in Germany as a medic. He was honorably discharged. On June 30, 1962 Melvin was united in marriage to Marilyn Roberts by Rev. Jystad in Moorhead. The couple made their home in Morris, Minneapolis and Winsted, until 1975 when they moved to Norwood Young America. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Wendy, Gregory and Cory. Melvin and Marilyn shared over 50 years of marriage.
Melvin worked at The Toro Company as a Senior Engineering Buyer until 2003, when he retired. He also authored a weekly Christian column in the Norwood Times for over a decade. Melvin was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norwood Young America. He was a participant of the “Goon Squad” Bible study and also a charter member of the “Prayer Warriors” at The Toro Company. Melvin’s faith was a very important part of his life and he loved participating in Bible studies and helping others. He enjoyed camping, running, Chinese food, White Castle and candy. Melvin especially cherished the time spent with his family and friends. Melvin passed away at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 14 days. Blessed be his memory.
Melvin is preceded in death by his father, Melvin Foss Sr.; grandfather and grandmother, Axel and Cora Johnson; parents-in-law, Ellwood and Lucille Roberts; nephew, Eric Roberts; sister-in-law, Jeanette Wendt.
Melvin is survived by his: wife, Marilyn Foss of Norwood Young America; children, Wendy Templin and her husband, Richard, of Glencoe, Gregory Foss and his wife, Alycia, of Minneapolis, Cory Foss and his wife, Erin, of St. Paul; grandchildren, Mathew Foss and his wife, Jessica, of Waconia, Sherri Templin of Glencoe, Tiffany Templin of Glencoe; great-grandchildren, Evan Foss, Grace Foss, Abigail Foss, Eloise Foss, Jeremiah Templin, Jena Templin; mother, Clara Foss of Hoffman; brothers, Leonard Foss and his wife, Sandy, of Winsted, Robert Foss and his wife, Donna, of Winsted; sisters, Cheryl Tommberdahl and her husband, Daryl of Elbow Lake, Minn., Patricia Sauter and her husband, Donald, of Victoria; brother-in-law, David Roberts and his wife, Shirley, of Waconia; sisters-in-law, Diane Solvie and her husband, Melvern, of Cyrus, Minn., Caroline Jensen of Longmont, Colo.; aunt (more like a sister), Shirley Graham and her husband, Larry, of Anoka; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
