‘Cats prepare for New Prague

Update: The Waconia football season has come to an end after the Wildcats fell to New Prague 38-19 on Tuesday. New Prague will advance to play No. 2 Mankato West.

On the road for the final game of the regular season, the Wildcat football team fell 34-14 at Orono.

Although the Spartans scored first on Oct. 17, the Wildcats responded still in the first quarter on a six-yard touchdown run by senior Riley Trnka. The game was tied 6-6 after one quarter. According to head coach Pat Foley, the game got away from Waconia right away in the second quarter, when Orono scored on their first play. Two additional touchdowns for the Spartans put Orono up 27-6 at halftime.

The third quarter was scoreless for both teams, but Orono scored on their first possession of the fourth quarter, now leading 34-6. After a solid march down the field, senior Jacob Fettig took the ball one yard for the Wildcats into the end zone. A two point conversation pass from senior quarterback Cody Clark to senior receiver Ryan Mattson brought the Wildcats to 14 points.

Mattson was the team’s top receiver of the night, with six receptions for 89 yards. Fettig, junior Hunter Baumann, and junior Tyler Mryvold each had a reception as well. At quarterback, Clark was 9-15 for 105 yards. Fettig led the Wildcats’ rushing game with 53 yards on 18 carries. Also rushing for Waconia was Mattson (42 yards), Trnka (35), sophomore Mason Hemze (13), Clark (10), and Baumann (5). On defense, senior Cody Ellis recovered a fumble while senior Mitch Green was credited with a sack. Tackle leaders included junior Matt Gorres (10), Trnka (10), senior Wyatt Held (9), and senior Charles Ombati (7).

The Wildcats finished the season 1-7 and drew the No. 6 seed in Section 2AAAAA. They faced off against No. 3 New Prague on Tuesday, and the winner will play on Saturday, Oct. 27 against No. 2 Mankato West.
