The Holy Family football teamed wrapped up the regular season on Oct. 17 with a 21-14 win over Delano.
The Fire finished the season 5-3 overall, second in the Wright County East standings behind Hutchinson.
A scoreless first quarter kicked off the Oct. 17 game. Delano scored in the second, before the Fire jumped on the board with a 25-yard run by senior quarterback Ben Baker. The kick was no good and the Fire trailed 7-6 at the half.
The Fire took the lead in the third quarter on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Baker to senior Derek Ogren. Baker and Ogren connected again for the two point conversion. Delano scored to start the fourth quarter, tying the game at 14-14 on a 60-yard run. Holy Family senior Conner Riddle won the game for the Fire on a two-yard touchdown run. The kick was good and the Fire won 21-14.
At quarterback, Baker was 5-8 for 97 yards and one touchdown. Baker was the team’s second leading rusher with 82 yards and one touchdown, topped only by Riddle, who led the Fire with 126 rushing yards and one touchdown. Senior Conner Byrnes had 49 rushing yards on 16 carries. Top receivers included Ogren (20 yards, one touchdown), senior Rollie Lacy (46 yards), and sophomore Justin Dahl (31 yards). The Fire scored three touchdowns on 66 offensive plays for 360 yards.
The Tigers tallied two touchdowns in 47 plays for 245 yards. Holy Family’s defense held the Tigers back, led by a host of defended passes by senior Charlie Marschall (2), senior Jimmy Curran, junior Luke Melander, and senior Patrick Danker. Leading tacklers included Ogren (12), senior Tom Green (8), and junior Nick Hanscom (7).
The Fire kicked off their postseason on Oct. 23 in the first round of Section 3AAAA, hosting No. 5 Richfield, winning 31-13. They will play Minneapolis Washburn on Saturday.
