In preparation for the section meet at Pierz Golf Course this Thursday, the Mayer Lutheran/Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed at the Watertown-Mayer invitational on Oct. 16.
The boys’ team, fresh from its recent conference title, won the invitational. Senior Alex Fredrickson won the race in 17:12, closely trailed by senior Jesse Greenhagen in second at 17:21. Junior Brandon Duffy was fifth overall, third for the Crusaders, with a time of 17:47. Kyle Fredrickson (18:02), Alex Mielke (19:46), and Ben Quiram (20:05) also competed for Mayer Lutheran.
“This was a great way to finish off the regular season,” coach Renae Johnson said. “This win just makes the team more mentally prepared for the section meet.”
Freshman Hannah Truniger set the pace for the Crusader girls, winning the race in 14:59. Senior Holly Johnson was 17th overall in 17:29, followed by seventh grader Emilie Berry at 17:36. Sarah Ruschmeier (18:21) and Marie Landskroener (18:32) also competed. Johnson said the girls are equally mentally and physically ready for sections.
The section meet is tonight, Oct. 25 at Pierz Golf Course. The top two teams will qualify for the state meet, along with the top eight individual runners that are not members of a state qualifying team. The state meet is Nov. 3 at St. Olaf. The Crusaders compete in Section 5A. The section has 24 teams including Annandale, HLWW, Watertown-Mayer, Providence Academy, Rockford, St. Cloud Cathedral, Pierz, PACT, and Maple Lake.
