In their final meet of the regular season, the Waconia boys’ and girls’ cross country teams used the Watertown-Mayer invitational on Oct. 16 as a primer meet for sections.
Despite a few runners still under the weather, the Waconia girls’ won the invitational. Lexi Willems was on the medal podium, finishing in the top ten runners in 15:51. Mayer Lutheran’s Hannah Truniger won the race in 14:59.
The Wildcat boys were fourth of eight teams, with Tony Fulkerson finishing in the top ten. The boys’ team from Mayer Lutheran won the meet.
The section meet is tonight, Oct. 25 at Buffalo. At this meet, the top two teams, and top eight individuals not on the top teams will advance to the state meet. The Wildcats compete in tough Section 2AA, which includes Buffalo, Chanhassen, Chaska, Dassel-Cokato, Delano, Holy Family, Hutchinson, Mankato East, Mankato West, Marshall, Mound-Westonka, Orono, Shakopee, and Worthington.
Head coach Clark Machtemes said there are a few runners within the reaches of state, if times turn out well on Thursday.
“Hopefully we’ll go on for another week,” he said.
The state meet will be held Nov. 3 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
