LHS sends three runners to state

After a chilly Section 5A meet last week at Pierz, the Mayer Lutheran/Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity boys’ and girls’ cross country teams have advanced three runners to the state meet.

Returning to the state meet for the boys will be senior Alex Fredrickson, who finished ninth overall at Pierz with a time of 16:59.5. Also advancing for the boys is senior Jesse Greenhagen, finishing 12th at sections in 17:03.3. Freshman Hannah Truniger will make her state debut appearance this weekend after finishing third on Thursday in 15:11.

“This was not a PR for Hannah, but she was working as hard as she possibly could and wanted to take the second place runner,” head coach Renae Johnson said. “She is excited to be running in the state meet as a freshman.”

Overall, the Crusader boys were fourth in the team competition with 163 points. St. Cloud Cathedral and Mora were the Section 5A team qualifiers. Foley’s Charlie Lawrence won the race in 15:58.5.

While Fredrickson and Greenhagen qualified as individuals in 9th and 12th positions, junior Brandon Duffy wasn’t far behind in 22nd at 17:37.5. Senior Kyle Fredrickson finished 42nd in 18:05.5. Sophomore Jacob Roth and freshmen Ben Quiram and Alex Mielke all finished within the top 100 runners in 78th (18:59.6), 82nd (19:04.2), and 92nd (19:33.9).

Other Section 5A individual state qualifiers include Lawrence (Foley), JP Flanders (Providence Academy), Greg Dorow (Maple Lake), Connor Shank (HLWW), Joe Bastian (Foley), and Matt Fliegel (Annandale).

Led by Truniger’s third place finish, the Crusader girls were 11th as a team with 283 points. Annandale and Spectrum were the girls’ team qualifiers, with St. Cloud Christian’s McKenzie Holt winning the race in 14:36.9.

Freshman Emily Berry was the second finisher for Mayer Lutheran, coming in 46th at 17:16. Seniors Sarah Ruschmeier and Holly Johnson both finished under 18 minutes with times of 17:43.5 (69th) and 17:58.6 (78th) respectively.

Seniors Miranda Buesing (87th, 18:20), Marie Landskroener (91st, 18:29.1), and Nina Kukowski (114th, 20:27.3) also competed for the Crusaders.

Other female individual qualifiers include Holt (St. Cloud Christian), Bethany Coop (Mora), Rachel Eickhoff (St. Cloud Cathedral), Halle Geyen (Maple Lake), Hannah Johnson (Watertown-Mayer), Liz Miller (Watertown-Mayer), and Sommer Carlson (Maple Lake).

The state meet is this Saturday, Nov. 3 at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The boys’ Class A race begins at 10 a.m., the girls to follow.
