Lorna Algolina (Mesenbring) Schmidt, age 97, of Belle Plaine, formerly of Glencoe, passed away Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012 at The Lutheran Home Care Center in Belle Plaine. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe, with interment following at First Lutheran Cemetery in Glencoe. Lorna Algolina (Mesenbring) Schmidt was born on June 18, 1915 in Young America Township, the daughter of Edward and Irene (Schmidt) Mesenbring. Lorna was baptized as an infant on July 4, 1915 by Rev. August Baumhoefner, and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth on March 24, 1929 by Rev. M. F. Abraham, both at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norwood Young America. Her confirmation verse was Psalm 26:8 “I love the house where you live, O Lord, the place where your Glory dwells.” Lorna received her education at District #108 country school and St. John’s Lutheran Church School in Norwood Young America. On March 19, 1939 Lorna was united in marriage to Henry Schmidt by Rev. W. P. Kramer at St. John’s Lutheran Church Parsonage in Norwood Young America. Lorna and Henry farmed south of Glencoe and then west of Hamburg, and in 1976 they moved to Glencoe. Their marriage was blessed with seven children, Wilhelm, Dennis, Edward, Karen, Sandra, Kathleen and Richard. Lorna and Henry shared over 53 years of marriage, until Henry passed away on Feb. 10, 1993. After Henry’s death, Lorna entered Millie Beneke Manor. In 2008, she moved to Norwood Young America, then to the Good Samaritan Home in Waconia before entering The Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine.
In addition to being a loving wife, mother and homemaker, Lorna helped on the farm and was an aid at the Glenhaven nursing home in Glencoe. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe. Lorna enjoyed gardening, baking, crocheting and quilting. She cherished the time spent with her family and friends. In 2009, when Lorna needed assistance with her daily care, she became a resident of The Lutheran Home Care Center in Belle Plaine. She passed away there at the age of 97 years, 4 months and 3 days. Lorna preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Irene Mesenbring; husband, Henry Schmidt; infant daughter, Karen Schmidt; sisters, Corda, Mabel; brothers, Leroy, Elmer, Raymond, Orville, Gordon.
Lorna is survived by her: children, Wilhelm Schmidt and his wife, Arlene, of Coloma, Mich., Dennis Schmidt and his wife, Darlene, of Norwood Young America, Edward Schmidt and his wife, Lorna, of Norwood Young America, Sandra Bruesehoff and her husband, Richard, of Chaska, Kathleen Schmidt of Glencoe, Richard Schmidt and his wife, Susan, of Norwood Young America; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
