No. 1 ‘Cats defeat No. 8 Buffalo

Update: The Waconia girls’ volleyball team fell 3-2 to No. 4 Shakopee on Oct. 30. The Sabers will advance to play No. 3 Chaska on Nov. 3.

For the second consecutive year, a match against Shakopee will determine if the Waconia volleyball team advances to the Section 2AAA final. After earning a bye in the first round for drawing the No. 1 seed, the Wildcats hosted the No. 4 Shakopee Sabers on Oct. 30. The winner moves on the section final.

Senior Caroline Jacobs had 22 digs for Waconia against No. 8 Buffalo on Oct. 26.

Last playoff season, the Wildcats fell at Shakopee 3-1. But before the section semifinal with Shakopee this year, the Wildcats had to first defeat No. 8 Buffalo.

They did just that in a 3-0 win on Oct. 26. Winning 25-11, 25-13, and 25-22, head coach Jim Lee said the Buffalo team was tough.

“Beating a talented team in the first round is a good start to the playoffs,” he said.

Lee said the serve-receive was nearly flawless throughout the evening, which allowed the Wildcat setters to conserve energy. Kills came from senior Anna Pioske (17) and sophomore Jessica Wolf (9). Senior Stephanie Dressen was credited with three blocks.

In the back, senior Caroline Jacobs had 22 digs.

“Caroline Jacobs really lit up the back row,” Lee said.

If the Wildcats were victorious on Oct. 30, they will play the winner of No. 2 Chanhassen/No. 3 Chaska in the section final on Nov. 3 at 6 p.m, location to be determined.
