The first in a series of community forums sponsored by the Mental Health Consortium of Carver County will focus on bringing teens and adults together to learn about suicide prevention. The Suicide Prevention Community Forum will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 17, at Ridgeview Medical Center, 500 S. Maple St. in Waconia.
Sparked by concern over the increase in suicide among local teens, the community forum will feature Dr. Dan Reidenberg, the Executive Director of SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voices in Education. He is the Managing Director of the National Council for Suicide Prevention and the U.S. representative to the International Association of Suicide Prevention.
The community forum will include separate break-out sessions for teens and adults led by mental health professionals. Participants are asked to pre-register through the Ridgeview Medical Center’s website at www.ridgeviewmedical.org/events. There is no charge for the event, and Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits are available.
The event is the first community forum to come out of the Mental Health Consortium, which plans to present quarterly forums on various topics related to mental health. There were eight suicide deaths in Carver County in 2010 and nine suicide deaths in 2011. Eight suicides were reported in the county in the first six months of 2012.
