Royals swimming season ends at sections
The season came to an end for the Watertown-Mayer/Delano swimming and diving team last week when the Royals finished in eighth place at the Section 8AA meet in Elk River on Saturday, Nov. 10.
Maple Grove won the section championship with 381.5 points. Watertown-Mayer finished with 124 points, and did not have any swimmers advance to this weekend’s state meet.
The Royals did, however, have a number of swimmers advance through prelims to compete in Saturday’s finals. Leading the way was diver Andi Jo Shrode, who finished in fifth place with 360.45 points. Maple Grove’s Lexi Tenenbaum won the event with a pool record 485.35 points.
The Royals’ Noelle Johnson was the team’s only swimmer to advance to compete in an “A” final, meaning the top 8. Johnson finished in seventh place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:35.07. Johnson also swam in the B Final of the 200-yard freestyle, finishing 13th with a time of 2:07.03.
Kayla Stevens also reached two B Finals for the Royals. She was 11th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.29 seconds, and she also took 11th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.62.
Sommer Heikkila finished in 12th place for the Royals in the 200-yard Individual Medley, clocking in with a time of 2:26.53 in the B Finals. Addie Weber added a 14th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:15.52, and Kalley Johnson finished 15th in the same event with a time of 1:16.16.
The Royals also swam in three relay finals. In the 200-yard medley relay, the Royals’ team of Thea Clark, Weber, Jenna Grangroth and Alexa Asbury finished in sixth place. They had a time of 2:03.47.
The Royals finished in eighth place in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Weber, Asbury, Klara Koch and Stevens teamed up to finish with a time of 1:45.57. The Royals’ team of Heikkila, Noelle Johnson, Filmore and Stevens also finished in seventh place for the Royals in the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 3:54.69.
