Obituary: Robert H. Steffen

Robert H. Steffen was born in Menomonie, Wis., to Herman and Hattie Steffen on Dec.2, 1918. The family moved to Minnesota in 1920. He attended grade and high school in Watertown.

He graduated from Hamline University, St. Paul, in 1940 with a degree in Economics. On April 27, 1940, he married his high school sweetheart – Grace Thompson.  During WWII he served as a Supply Officer in the U.S. Navy. He was a career employee of Travelers Insurance Co. working for them in Minnesota, Texas, Kentucky, New Jersey and California. He retired in 1984. For 17 years after retirement, Bob served as a volunteer, assisting the California-Nevada- Hawaii District of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, in the development of its Church Extension Fund and the relocation of its District Office.

Bob is survived by sons David and wife, Joan; Paul and wife, Gailene; Mark and Partner, Randy Price; Peter and wife, Astrid; daughter, Ann; 7 grandchildren: John Steffen and wife, Michele; Samantha and husband, Scott Phillips; Joshua Steffen and wife, Nola; Meghan and husband, Christian Perreira; Jennifer and husband, Mike Crepeau; Sandy and husband, Peter Chelico; Elizabeth and husband, Travis Ohlde; 6 great-grandchildren: Nicholas Phillips; Saydee Steffen; Jack, Camryn, and Kate Crepeau; Mia Chelico; Grace Ohlde; brother John Steffen and wife Pat; sisters-in-law Lucille Sandquist and Adele Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace; his parents, Herman and Hattie; his sisters, Louise and Eloise and his son, Phillip.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2317 Buena Vista Ave., Walnut Creek, California. A short memorial service and interment will be held in the Spring at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown. Specific date TBD.
