Bird counting and children’s activities planned at Lowry Nature Center

The following activities are planned by Three Rivers Park District and will take place at Lowry Nature Center in the Carver Park Reserve in Victoria.

Audubon Christmas Bird Count
Come out on Saturday, Dec.15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the “Audubon Christmas Bird Count.” Beginners and expert birders alike are invited to take part in this annual, nationwide census of our feathered friends. So get out and enjoy great winter birding with family and friends.
Call Lowry 763-694-7650 to sign up for a section of the park, and let us know if you will attend for a full or half-day. This program is co-sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists’ Union. This program is free and open to ages 10-plus.

Make a Gingerbread House
Sunday, Dec. 9, from 1-3 p.m. Make a sweet holiday memory! Build and decorate a simple cracker and candy house. Colorful houses make a great centerpiece for holiday decorating and can be preserved or eaten. Cost is $7 per house and reservations are required.

Cat Crazy for the Holidays
Saturday, Dec. 8, from 1-3 p.m. Make the holidays special for your cat with a homemade toy, gift and card. Sew a catnip pillow by hand, create cat gift tags for presents, and make an easy cat toy. Cost is $7 per set and reservations are required.

My Preschooler & Me: Lowry Little Ones: Winter Chickadees
Monday, Dec. 10, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Discover the fascinating life of a black-capped chickadee with your preschooler! Come out for hands-on activities indoors, and then hike outdoors in search of these year-round Minnesota songbirds. Learn how chickadees stay warm, and what songs they sing. Help feed the birds outside, and then make your own feeder to take home. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on your own after the program.

Preschool Drop-off: Kits & Cubs: Chickadees
Monday, Dec.10, from 1-3 p.m. Drop off your preschooler to explore the world of a black-capped chickadee! We’ll sing like chickadees, search for them outside, and learn how these little birds stay warm at night. Make a craft and end the day with a story.
