For the Waconia Lakettes, the first competition of the year is simply that, the first.
“With the first competition we do nothing but focus on getting the teams out on the competition floor to get all the butterflies out of their system,” said head coach Amy Segner.
Competing at Chaska on Dec. 1, Waconia faced off against 17 teams, include Wright County Conference competitors Mound-Westonka, Hutchinson, and Delano. The Lakettes finished 13th in the high kick division, above Delano (15th) and Hutchinson (17th).
Marshall and Mound-Westonka both placed in the top ten. The three Wright County teams and Marshall are the Lakettes section competitors and were the focus during the meet.
The Lakettes scored in the “average” category for kick.
“We can only go up from here with every competition,” Segner said.
The Lakettes were also 13th (of 15) in jazz, defeating Hutchinson and Delano again. Scores were again in the average category, right where the coaches want them to be in the first competition, Segner said. Moving forward, she said the Lakettes will continue to work on the techniques in the jazz routine and working towards a 100 percent comfort level.
“Both routines have so much potential that we are very excited with each competition to come,” Segner said.
