Hardware store’s closing could leave void in downtown Watertown

Though there have been numerous owners, several names and multiple locations, a hardware store has graced Watertown’s main street for most of the last century.

But with the recent announcement that Watertown True Value Hardware would be closing as of the end of December, that streak is in serious jeopardy. Owners Chris and Beth Johnson are closing the store at 300 Lewis Ave. S., potentially leaving the town, at least temporarily, without one of its cornerstone businesses.

“It was a very difficult decision, number one, for our employees, because we never like to put our employees in a bind,” Beth Johnson said. “Secondly, it was tough because of our customers, because we have customers that are very, very loyal.”
