The Waconia boys’ basketball team is now 3-0 after a 76-57 win over Richfield on Dec. 8.
Wildcat head coach Pat Hayes said the team was challenged by the Spartans full-court press and transition game, but a strong early defensive start for Waconia allowed the team easy inside baskets. Early in the second half, the Wildcats had pushed their lead to as many as 30 points.
“But Richfield kept the press on and did a nice job of making us rush our passes and shots,” Hayes said.
Senior Alex led the Wildcat attack with 20 points. Fellow senior Matt Rachey contributed 15 points, followed by juniors Josh Lenz and Ryan Boll, who both had 12 points. Waconia shot 49 percent from the floor, excelling from both two- and three-point range. Rachey sunk all three of his three-pointer attempts.
The team snapped up eight steals off the Spartans, led by Boll with two. Rachey, Lenz, junior Jacob Herd, sophomore Avery Talton, Ferron, and Chandler each grabbed one.
Senior Wylie Ferron had a career-high 14 rebounds, while Chandler picked up eight.
