The Waconia girls’ basketball team split two games the week before break, picking up a conference win over Mound-Westonka, but also falling to No. 8 (3A) Chaska.
The winner of the Dec. 18 game was never really in question as the Wildcats faced off against Mound-Westonka last Tuesday.
Jumping out to an early 11-0 lead, the Wildcats led by 36 points at halftime. The gap continued to grow in the second half, and Waconia easily cruised to the 75-29 win, a nearly 45-point victory.
Scoring was fairly balanced across the table as 13 different players scored for the team, while only senior Morgan Iverson hit double digits. Sami Jones and Emily Anderson scored their first varsity points against Mound-Westonka. Five-foot-seven sophomore guard Anna Schmitt led the team with eight rebounds, closely trailed by Iverson (7), and senior Stephanie Dressen (6). The ‘Cats also snagged 11 steals from the White Hawks, while only committing nine turnovers during the game.
At Chaska on Friday, Dec. 21, the ‘Cats fell to the No. 8 ranked Hawks in a 57-51 contest. Additional details were not available when this issue went to press. Waconia is now 6-5 this season.
