In their last home meet of the season, the Waconia wrestling team defeated conference foes Delano and Orono on Thursday, Dec. 20. Head coach Kelly Wagener said the Wildcats thought they would be able to wrestle well against both teams.
Facing Delano first, Waconia won 56-19. With wrestlers injured or ill, Delano forfeited many weights, so Wagener said the match was not the gauge he had hoped for.
Wagener said the feature match against Delano was in senior Max Bullock. Although Bullock would eventually lose, he wrestled well against a state runner up, Wagener said.
The ‘Cats went on to defeat Orono 51-16. The Spartans had a much fuller squad than Delano did, and Wagener said it was “great to see a lot of kids get matches.”
Winning a large number of the smaller weight classes, the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead. Wagener highlighted freshmen Josh Reich and Owen Hemze, as well as sophomore Mason Hemze as having wrestled very well against Orono, picking up wins for the team.
Wagener said the Wildcats were very focused against Orono and he was pleased with the overall performances on the night. Additional details were not available when this issue went to press.
The Wildcats return to the mat Jan. 3 against Glencoe-Silver Lake and Hutchinson at Glencoe.
Wagener said as the second half of the season gets underway in the new year, the team goals are simple: to keep competing and to stay healthy.
