Royal boys go 1-1 in Annandale Tourney

The Watertown-Mayer boys’ basketball team finished in second place last week in the Annandale Tournament, fallling to No. 9 Annandale, 63-59 in the championship game on Saturday, Dec. 29. The Royals had advanced to the finals one day earlier by outlasting Chatfield, 49-47, in overtime.

Against Annandale, the Royals trailed 39-26 at halftime. Despite outscoring the Cardinals in the second half, the Royals didn’t quite have enough left to finish off a comeback attempt.

Jacob Wandersee and Caleb Fails led the team with 12 points apiece, and Luke Sandquist had 11. Mark Sandquist had nine points, and Barna Berenyi and Hunter Hulley both finished with six.

Brett Ahsenmacher finished with 26 points to lead Annandale, and Matt Miller had 16 points.

Because of early deadlines for this week’s paper, no further stats were available at press time. There also were not stats available from Friday’s win over Chatfield.

The Royals also finished in second place in the Kimball Tournament one week earlier. After winning in the first round on Dec. 20, the Royals fell to Kimball, 68-52, in the championship. Luke Sandquist led the way with 26 points in that game.

The Royals will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 3, when they travel to take on Tri City United at 7:30 p.m. the royals will also play in the Glencoe Silver Lake Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 1 p.m., and will travel to LeSueur-Henderson on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m.

The Royals are now 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the Minnesota River Conference.
