Both the Waconia boys’ and girls’ hockey teams picked up victories over the semester break. The girls, who co-op with Holy Family, were 3-0 at the Schwan Cup in Blaine Dec. 27-29.
In their first game, the Wildfire defeated Holy Angels 4-1 on Dec. 27. The Wildfire outshot the Angels 39-7. Sevenyth grader Chloe McEnelly scored two goals in the first two periods, on assists from eighth grader Ashlyn Rakos and junior Shania Gonzales, and sophomore Claire Pernat and senior Jaci Reinke.
The Stars put up a goal in the third, only to be followed by a goal at 10:06 from freshman Megan Menzuber, assisted by senior Megan Bunker and freshman Allyson Marrs. Sophomore Abby Hanscom scored the final goal unassisted at 15:58.
Freshman Lexi Hartmann was in goal and finished with a .857 save percentage.
The next day, the Wildfire took down Hudson, Wisc. in a 3-1 game. Goals came from Marrs, Hanscom, and Gonzales, sprinkled through the three periods. Hartmann saved 13 of 14 Raider shots for a .929 save percentage. The Wildfire outshot Hudson 36-14.
With 31 shots on goal to the Mariners 13, the Wildfire went on to defeat Silver Bay/Two Harbors/Cook County/Ely/Babbit on Dec. 29 in a 4-1 contest.
Marrs put the first goal on the board at 11:54 in the first, assisted by Menzuber and Bunker. Hanscom finished the period with a goal, assisted by junior Brityn Ryshavy, to put Holy Family/Waconia up 2-0.
Hanscom scored unassisted at 7:04 in the second. Silver Bay scored its lone goal at 14:49 in the third, only to be answered by the completion of Hanscom’s hat trick at 16:35.
Hartmann saved 12 shots for a .923 save percentage.
The Wildfire will host Shakopee on Saturday, Jan. 5 at the Victoria Ice Arena, beginning at 4:30 p.m. They will then travel to Orono on Jan. 8. Holy Family/Waconia is 12-2-1 this season.
The Wildcat boys competed in two regular season games over the break, the first a 5-3 victory on the road against St. Peter/LeSueur-Henderson/Tri-City United on Dec. 28.
The Bulldogs posted two goals in the first period before senior Tanner Riebel found the back of the net on a power play at 9:49. Riebel was assisted by senior Ryan Mattson adn junior Kevin Kittleson. St. Peter would score once more to lead 3-1 at the end of the first period.
Riebel scored on another power play in the second, this time at 8:40, assisted by Kittleson and senior Justin Reinke. Reinke, in turn, scored at 11:34, assisted by Riebel.
Two unassisted goals in the third period sealed the 5-3 win for Waconia. First, Reinke scored at 10 minutes even, before Riebel completed his hat trick at 15:17.
The Wildcats outshot the Bulldogs 44-22. In goal for Waconia was senior Nathan Kovach, saving 19 shots for a save percentage of .864.
At Northfield on Dec. 29, the Wildcats fell in overtime to the Raiders. Riebel scored the ‘Cats lone goal on a power play at 15:29 in the first period. Kittleson assisted Riebel’s goal.
Northfield scored in the second, and while the third period was a scoreless stalemate, Northfield was able to score at 0:58 in the first overtime period to win the game.
Waconia had 35 shots on goal to Northfield’s 33. Kovach saved 31 shots for a .939 save percentage.
The boys are now 4-7 this season and will host St. Michael-Albertville on Jan. 8.
