Mary Ann Mechtel, age 75, of Waconia, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2013 at  Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Mass of Christian Burial held Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waconia with Father Bill Paron as celebrant of the Mass: visitation was Monday 4-7 p.m. Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia and at the church one hour prior to the Mass. Interment at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
Mary Ann was born on Jan. 17, 1938 in Laketown Twp., Carver County, the daughter of Everard and Dorothy (Unglaub) Poppler. Mary Ann was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waconia. On Aug. 23, 1958 Mary Ann was united in marriage to Januarius L. Mechtel at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waconia by Father Joseph Kauer.
Mary Ann was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an excellent cook and baker and you could smell the aroma before even entering her home. Mary Ann had the best caramel rolls and made some of the best beef jerky in the world. She had a passion for gardening working with plants and flowers.
Mary Ann enjoyed collecting angels, she had almost 300 and various different oil lamps. Holidays were a very special time for her always making way to much food that everybody liked to eat. Mary Ann taught religious education at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church when her children were part of the program. She was also a member of the Waconia VFW Auxiliary.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband Januarius; son Timothy Mechtel; grandson Shaun Mechtel; parents Everard and Dorothy Poppler; step-brother Frank Biersdorf; Uncle and Aunt Harold and Verdella Unglaub.
Mary Ann is survived by her loving family: children and spouses Anthony and Jackie Mechtel of Green Isle, Judy Mechtel and special friend Pat Sicheneder of New Germany, Charles and Sue Mechtel of Green Isle, Rebecca and Mark Schuettpelz of Norwood Young America, Renee Bosma of Waconia, Victoria and Jeffrey Wildung of Cologne; grandchildren Anthony Mark Mechtel II, Jason Mechtel, Kristina Mechtel, Gary Mechtel, Jack Wells, Amber Bosma; great-grandson Richard Mechtel; sister Betty Hesse of Chaska; step-sisters and husbands Sandy and Bob Sligher of Iowa, Carol and LeRoy Dreier of Norwood Young America; step- brother Roger Biersdorf of Plato; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Rena and Dean Smith of Shakopee, Joan Plekkenpol of Shakopee, Myrtle and Marvin Williams of Chaska, Beatrice Mechtel of Victoria, Carol Mechtel of Shakopee, Rose and Vernon Hartmann of Jordan; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
