The Holy Family/Waconia girls’ hockey team is back in the fight for the Wright County Conference title after defeating Orono last week.
The Wildfire and Spartans are currently tied for the top of the WCC with 6-1 records, with just over a week remaining in the regular season.
After defeating Hutchinson 3-2 on Jan. 17, the Wildfire hosted the Spartans on Jan. 19. Freshman Megan Menzuber put the Wildfire up 1-0 in the first period, scoring 32 seconds into the game. Her goal came on assists from junior Sarah Rosland and senior Megan Bunker.
Still leading 1-0 into the third period, Rosland scored a power play goal at 6:35 in the third, assisted by Menzuber and senior Jaci Reinke, for the 2-0 lead.
Although the Spartans would score at 8:33, Reinke put away the game for the Wildfire with the team’s third goal at 12:10. The power play goal was assisted by Rosland and Menzuber.
Holy Family/Waconia outshot Orono 25-21, and freshman Lexi Hartmann saved 20 shots on goal for a .952 save percentage.
The Wildfire are at section foe Bloomington Kennedy next Tuesday, Jan. 29 before hosting New Ulm Jan. 31. The regular season will wrap up Feb. 2 at Mound-Westonka.
