Royal gymnasts take eighth at True Team Invite
The Watertown-Mayer gymnastics team finished in eighth place out of 10 teams at the True Team Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26, at Jackson County Central High School.
AHS won the met with 178.9 points. Watertown-Mayer scored 171.8.
The Royals’ best event was vault, where the team finished in fourth place. On that event, Caitlin Duske led the way for the Royals with a score of 9.5, while Katie Heilman was far behind with a 9.25, and Brooke Leaf had a 9.0. Tina Scanlon also scored an 8.8 for the Royals.
On the uneven bars, it was Scanlon who led the way for the Royals with an 8.425. Heilman had an 8.1, while Leaf finished with a score of 7.925. Megan McCain had a score of 7.65, and Duske finished with a 7.425.
Leaf had the Royals’ top score on the balance beam, posting a 9.3. McCain finished with a 9.2, while Heilman was at 8.175 and Duske finished with an 8.025. Caitlin Kammerer had a 7.8.
On floor exercise, Duske’s 9.425 led the way for Watertown-Mayer. Brooke Leaf added a 9.1. MCain was at 8.975, Heilman finished at 8.875 and Scanlon scored an 8.5
The Royals were also in action earlier in the week for a dual meet against Litchfield on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 22. In that meet, the Royals rested many of their regular varsity gymnasts, but still won with ease, 135.9 to 122.775.
With only two gymnasts competing in all four events — one for each team — McCain won the all-around with a score of 34.675. She was second on vault with an 8.8, third on beam with an 8.425, second on floor with a 9.075 and second on bars with an 8.375.
Also on vault for the Royals, Ally Matrella was third with an 8.7 and Kammerer was fourth with an 8.5. Emma Strom had an 8.4 and Ella may scored an 8.175.
On bars, Scanlon finished first with a score of 8.550. Duske was third at 7.975, while Strom scored a 7.425.
On the balance beam, leaf finished first with an 8.750. Duske was second at 8.6, and Heilman was fifth at 7.425.
On floor, leaf also finished first with a 9.25. Heilman was third at 8.9, and Matrella was fourth at 8.75. Kammerer also scored an 8.175.
The Royals will be back in action for a home meet, beginning at 6 p.m., against Annandale on Friday, Feb. 1. The Royals will then close the regular season with a meet at Waconia on Thursday, Feb. 2.
