Royals cruise past St. Cloud Apollo, but fall to Orono
The Watertown-Mayer/Waconia/Delano/Holy Family swimming and diving team went 1-1 in a pair of dual meets last week, routing St. Cloud Apollo on the road, 122-62, but falling to Orono, 116-70.
In the meet against Apollo on Tuesday, Jan. 22, the Royals won eight of the 12 events, took two of the top three spots in 10 of the events, and took the top two spots in four of them, including the 200-yard freestyle relay. In that event, Kurt Gilbertson, Tylor Franklin, jack Dalluge and Shawn Wasser teamed up to win the event with a time of 1:40.45, while Jake Weber, Givon Kumal, Austin Gilbertson and Tristan Gens combined to finish in 1:48.14 and finish in second place.
The Royals also went 1-2 in the 200-yard Individual Medley. Ben DeSutter won that event with a time of 2:23.89, while Gilbert was second in 2:29.44. The Royals also nabbed the top two spots in the 50-yard freestyle, with Wasser winning with a time of 24.2 seconds and Franklin taking second in 25.83 seconds, and in the 100-yard freestyle with Wasser taking first in a time of 55.21 seconds and DeSutter taking second in 55.31 seconds.
The Royals also won the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. In the 400-Free relay, Wasser, Dalluge, DeSutter and Zach Holman teamed up to win in 3:47.82. In the 200-medley relay, DeSutter, Gilbertson, Holman and Franklin came in with a first-place time of 1:52.87.
Other first-place finishes for the Royals both went to Holman, who won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.17 seconds, and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.54.
Other second-place finishes for the Royals went to Dalluge, who took second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:06.7, Tristan Gens, who took second in diving with 177.9 points, Brent Unowsky, who second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:49.20, and Franklin, who was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.80.
Other third-place finishes for the Royals included Gilbertson in the 100-yard butterfly (1:10.14), Adam Bartell in the 500-yard freestyle (6:22.90), Unowsky in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.36) and Gilbertson in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.15).
Against Orono on Thursday, Jan. 24, the Royals won two events. The team of Wasser, Franlin, Gilbertson and Holman won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:37.49, and Gilbertson won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.81.
Shawn Wasser picked up two second-place finishes for the Royals, finishing the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.57 and the 100-yard freestyle in 55.53 seconds. Other second-place finishes for the Royals included Dalluge in the 200-yard IM (2:20.91) and Holman in the 50-yard freestyle (23.70).
Third-place finishes for the Royals included Franklin in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.27), DeSutter in the 200-yard IM (2:21.90) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.32), Gilbertson in the 50-yard freestyle (24.14) and Holman in the 500-yard freestyle (5:33.73).
Next up for the Royals is a meet on Thursday, Jan. 31, when they host Chanhassen at 6 p.m. The Royals will also be at home on Tuesday, Feb. 5, when they play host to Princeton at 6 p.m.
